The Politics of Effective Leadership

Our national culture is beset with conflict and polarization. Whether it’s the news, election cycles, police brutality, vaccines, or the environment, everyone is picking sides, and they’re doing so in ways that make dialog and progress very difficult. To make matters worse, public figures (politicians and news media) often work to fan the flames of polarization. This presentation discusses the deep psychological roots of polarization and how we can not only overcome this tendency in ourselves but be effective leaders in a culture of polarization. I will cover topics that include how our brain sets us up for polarization, the role of bias in our psychological journey away from civility, ways to recognize polarization in yourself, as well as steps to take to lead effectively in a way that builds bridges, rather than destroys them.
  • Understand the nature of how our brain is wired to be polarized and how to recognize it
  • Be able to explain the psychological journey toward polarization and the organizational impact this has
  • Demonstrate the psychological journey toward collaboration and the organizational impact this has
  • Appreciation of the 4-chair metaphor as a structure for understanding how we should be operating in organizations
  • Determine how best to lead in a polarized environment, creating a culture of bridge-building
